Sunil Rajshekhar has joined as the COO of Times Internet Ltd (TIL / Indiatimes), MediaNama has learned. On being contacted, Times Internet has confirmed his appointment. Rajshekhar was previously the head of BCCLs Private Treaties business, and at Indiatimes, he will report to TIL MD & CEO Dinesh Wadhawan.

Rajshekhar is a BCCL (Times of India group) veteran, with over 25 years with the group, and had initiated BCCLs Internet foray with Times Interactive and the launch of Indiatimes. During the dot com boom, he had led an exodus from Times Group to the ill-fated Indiainfo.com, which eventually tanked. He moved to the interactive division STAR TV, then back to BCCL to head Private Treaties. Prior to returning to the Internet business at BCCL, Rajshekhar was Director, South with the Times Group.

We’ve also received reports of a number of middle level executives having left Indiatimes in the recent past, which has also been confirmed by Indiatimes. Apparently, there is some restructuring in progress.

Update: E4M reported and we confirmed it too – Rajshekhar has joined as President & COO.

Sunil R was de facto CEO of Indiatimes ten years back as VP Indiatimes. Then moved to illfated indiinfo-which went down the tube where he was CEO.So also Star Interactive which too was illfated, when he took over.It went down soon after.

To come back to indiatimes as COO and after 25 years in Times Group is definitely a step down. His stints everywhere else have been uneventful since he was VP.

nikhil – you broke a good story but seem to have been misinformed. the guys who left didn’t contribute much so their going probbaly saved indiatimes some money and office space too.

what’s not reported is the resignation vineet jain is refusing to accept – one of their most valued people has put in papers over two months ago. it’s an open secret and they don’t know how to handle it. insiders say he is the ’soul’ of the company and that they’ll be lost without him. exaggerated i think but figure out who he is and let’s see if he decides to stay back or go.

as for sunil,he’ll make a difference. third internet company for him – third time lucky!

Bhaloo – i know whom you’re taking about – and we checked that out too. My sources say that he’s staying.

If he’s staying, then the sun must be rising from the West these days… assuming it’s the same gent we’re referring to ;-}

Nikhil Pahwa + July 13th, 2008 (#):

The same. :) So I guess I’ll have to check and update…

He is staying? When did this happen? Is he out of his mind?

It is surprising that people talk of things of 10 years back. Indiatimes was at its very nascent stage when Sunil was at the helm. To talk of being a COO of 200-250 crore co. as a step down to being a VP of zero crore company is ridiculuos.

I have not worked with Sunil, but every one who has recommends him and working with him. Success and failure in businesses are never individual. What say?

Mohit Hira leaving Indiatimes? ( refering to Bhaloo and Nikhil’s chit chat)

Nikhil Pahwa + July 17th, 2008 (#):

Bhaloo – from what I’m told, he’s not. (Window Shopper – keep guessing :))

Guys dont drop names.
He is the soul of the company and he is staying.
And as far as Sunil R , industry knows he is a great professional..and yes everbody who has worked with him.. knows that.
BCCL has a long history of having two top shots together .. reasons are anybodys guess.. or debate.. i guess logic being atleast one will work..
but for sure.. there is more to this…

Sunil Rajshekhar is one hell of a guy. He called me to his office and made me redo the whole appraisal form so that I would get a better increment — and I did. I never knew such guys existed on earth anymore. I don’t care if his projects tanked. I feel he had the guts to try something new every few years.
